Read books and more with Apple Books

With Apple Books, you can buy and download books, and personalize your reading experience.

Browse the book store

You can find and buy books from a wide variety of categories and genres in the Book Store.

Browse books on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

  1. Open the Books app, then tap Book Store at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Search the charts or the books recommended for you. Or tap Browse Sections to browse categories like Coming Soon, or genres like Youth or Nonfiction. You can also tap the Search tab to find specific titles, authors, storytellers, and more.
  3. Tap a book. Tap "Excerpt" to preview the book, or tap "Reading List" to add the book to your Reading List in the "Read Now" tab.

Tap "Buy" to complete the purchase of your book. Any books, book series, PDFs, and audiobooks that you purchased from the Book Store or Audiobooks Store, or added manually to your device, appear in the Library tab.

Browse books on your Mac

  1. Open the Books app and click Book Store at the top of the window.
  2. Click Charts, The New York Times, or Top Authors in the sidebar to search for books. Or click Categories to browse genres such as Comics and Comic Fiction, History, or Crime & Thrillers. You can also use the search option in the top right corner to do this.
  3. Click on a book. Then click on "Get Excerpt" to preview the book before buying it.

Click "Buy" to confirm purchase of your book. Any books, book series, PDFs, and audiobooks that you purchased from the Book Store or Audiobooks Store, or added manually to your Mac, appear in the Library tab on the All Books tab in the sidebar.

Read books

Tap or double-click a book to open and read it. When you close the book, Apple Books saves where you left off. With the available controls you can personalize your reading experience and annotate passages. You can also search for a specific word or page number and create bookmarks that you can view again later.

Reading control on the iPhone, iPad or iPod touch

On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, tap the center of the screen to open and close the controls as you read. Tap the Table of Contents button to skip to another chapter or section, view the bookmarks you added, and view the highlights and notes you created.

Read control on the Mac

While reading on your Mac, move your mouse to the top of the book to reveal the controls. Click the "Table of Contents" button to skip to another chapter or section. To jump to a bookmarked page, click the down arrow next to the Bookmarks button .

Manage your library

Download books to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  1. Find the article in your library. The book you want is not displayed?
  2. Tap the book to open and automatically load. Or tap the More button under the book and select Download.
  3. If the book is part of a book series, tap to open it, then tap the Load button under the book you want.

Organize your library on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  1. Tap on "Library".
  2. Under "Collections," tap the word next to "Sort". If you don't see "Sort," swipe down on the screen to see it.
  3. Select Recent, Title, Author, or Manual from the menu that appears. You can sort other collections as well. For example, you can choose Collections> Audiobooks to sort your audiobooks by author.

Click on the "List view" buttonto view your books as a list instead of a grid.

Download books to your Mac

  1. Find the article in your library. The book you want is not displayed?
  2. Click the cloud icon in the top right. If you don't see the cloud icon, the book has already been downloaded to your device.
  3. If the book is part of a book series, first double-click to open the book series, then click the cloud icon to load the book you want.

Organize the library on your Mac

  1. Click on "All Books" in the left sidebar.
  2. Click on "Sort by" in the top right corner.
  3. Select the "Last Read", "Title", or "Sort Manually" option.

Click on the "List view" buttonto view your books as a list instead of a grid.

When a particular book is not displayed

If a book you bought from the Book Store isn't showing up in your library, here are a few things to try.

Activate iCloud on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap [your name]> iCloud.
  3. Turn on both iCloud Drive and Books.
  4. Then go to Settings> Books. Activate the option "iCloud Drive" under "Synchronization".

Get all of your books on your Mac

  1. Click the Book Store tab at the top of the window.
  2. Click on "Recommended" in the sidebar.
  3. Under "All in One Click" click on "Purchases".
  4. Click on "Load all" in the lower right corner.

Reload or fade in books

You can reload books that you've deleted to add them back to your library.

If you've hidden certain purchases, you can show the books.
