Debian dies

Debian founder Ian Murdock mysteriously dies

Ian Murdock, the founder of the Linux distribution Debian, died at the age of 42. He died on the night of December 28, 2015.

Docker, Ian Murdock's current employer, brought the news in a blog post. The blog posts do not say what caused Ian's sudden death.

The life of 'ian' from Debian

Ian Murdock created the Debian Project as a student at Purdue University. He named Debian after his girlfriend at the time, Debra (Deb) and himself (Ian). While Debra and Ian were separated, Debian became one of the most successful open source projects of all time.

Ian had contributed to a number of projects. He founded Progeny, a commercial Linux company. He later became CTO of the Linux Foundation. In 2003, he moved to Sun Microsystem to work on a project in Indiana that led to the OpenSolaris operating system.

He worked for SalesForce before joining Docker.

Foul play?

While there is no confirmed news as to whether it was a natural death or a suicide or something else, there is a sense of mystery surrounding its death.

Ian posted some really weird tweets from his account on December 28th. He mentioned police abuse and threatened suicide.

Initially, it was speculated that his Twitter account may have been compromised. However, in this unfortunate event, there is a possibility of foul play.

His Twitter account @imurdock no longer exists, but screenshots of his tweets have been saved by some Reddit users. Here are most of those tweets:

Another Aaron Swartz?

This unfortunate event reminds me of a similar event a few years ago when the computer wizard Aaron Swartz committed suicide at the tender age of 26. He took this step after constant harassment by the Fedaral agency.

rest in peace

It's sad and shocking news for the entire open source community. May his soul rest in peace. His contribution to the tech community can never be forgotten.
