Messi or Ronaldo? Scientists use a new formula to find out who is better

Football fans around the world have been desperate over this one question for over ten years: Who is better, Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo? Discussions divide whole groups of friends, families and amateur teams. It is a question of faith who is the best player on this planet.

Both players have each won the title of world footballer five times, score goals on the assembly line and have lifted more trophies than most clubs have in their showcase. But who is really better? Can you even commit to one?

You can, say scientists from the renowned university in Leuven, Belgium. They created a formula to find the GOAT, the "Greatest Of All Time". The crux of the matter: The formula looks at the entire game and not just goals and assists. All actions of a player are included in the rating. "That gives you a more complete picture of a player and his value for the team," explained Professor Jesse Davis to the "Sporza" portal.

"Messi is exceptional"

The seasons from 2013 to 2018 in the Primera Division and in the Spanish Cup were analyzed. During this time both played in the same country: Lionel Messi tied his shoes for FC Barcelona, as he still does today, long-term rival Cristiano Ronaldo shone at Real Madrid before moving to Juventus Turin.

And yes, we don't want to keep you tortured anymore - just one more thing first: The result of the scientists is astonishingly clear. Messi comes to a value of 1.21 - Ronaldo only brings it to 0.61. The difference is that as his career progressed, the Portuguese developed from a director to a goal machine. He has fewer high value actions. The Argentine is different: "Messi is exceptional in this regard: he performs a very large number of actions and these are also of great value"said study co-author Tom Decroos.

The formula explains: This is how the researchers arrive at their result.Video: YouTube / KDD2019

Hazard in Ronaldo's footsteps

Since this summer, Cristiano Ronaldo has been replaced by Eden Hazard at Real Madrid. It goes without saying that the Belgian researchers were interested in whether their compatriot could be a worthy successor. The result: he can. Hazard's value of 0.64 is even a bit better than that of its famous predecessor.

The scientists come to a conclusion that can be reached without complicated calculations: Hazard is a good reinforcement for Real, but not a direct replacement. Los Blancos would have to change their style of play, as Hazard is more involved in the game and not a classic goal getter like Ronaldo.

Cristiano Ronaldo had recently given a hint in an interview that he sees himself at the fore in the GOAT debate. After all, he won the Champions League with several clubs (Manchester United, Real Madrid) and not just with one club like Messi.

Are both rivals going to eat together soon?

In a recent interview, however, CR7 stressed that he had "an excellent relationship on a professional level" with Messi. The Argentine has undoubtedly made him a better player and he "admires his career".

Off the pitch, the two over-soccer players of the present have not had much to do with each other so far. "We never dined together, "revealed Ronaldo. "But I don't know what should prevent us from doing so in the future. I would have no problem with it."

Maybe with a good piece of Argentine beef or a portion of Bacalhau you can laugh at all the researchers and fans who have been racking their brains for a decade over who is better. And you can with one gulp red wine Toast tap water to the fact that it is also possible that they are both GOATs.
