Can we format WhatsApp messages

How to format your WhatsApp messages

Sometimes you want to put a little emphasis on certain words in your messages. If you're a WhatsApp user, you can add four types of highlighting either inline or through a menu.

The types of formatting you can apply in a WhatsApp message are bold, Italics, and monospacing. To apply formatting manually, you need to put a specific punctuation mark on either side of a word (or series of words):

  • Bold: Put an asterisk on both sides (* bold *).
  • Italic: Place an underscore on both sides (_italic_).
  • Strikethrough: Put a tilde on either side (~ crossed out ~).
  • Monospace: Place three back ticks on either side ().

When you send your message, the text will be displayed with the selected formatting.

If you don't type a lot - especially if you want to use monospace (the back tick is often hidden on smartphone keyboards) - you can also use the built-in formatting menu.

Long press the word you want to format and then Menu will appear. The Bold option is already visible on Android. To access the other formatting options, tap the three dots on the right side of the menu or the BIU option in the menu for the iPhone.

This will bring up the other formatting options that you can choose from.

Select the formatting option you want - we'll choose Monospace - and the appropriate punctuation marks will be added automatically.

Tap the send button that looks like an arrow and your message will be sent with the formatting applied.

Additionally, you can add multiple formats to messages by using any combination of bold, italic, and strikethrough.

The only limitation is monospace. This limitation applies because the formatting option allows you to add asterisks, underscores, or tildes to a message without changing the appearance of the text.
