What is the verdict on dyeing your hair black?

It is not allowed to dye your hair black, regardless of whether it is your beard or scalp hair. Several statements by the messenger sallAllahu alaihi wa sallam indicate that it is correct to dye one's hair red, yellow or a mixture of henna and katam. He (sallAllahu alaihi wa sallam) also said clearly: "Changes the color of the white hair, but avoids (coloring) it black." We find this hadith in Muslim (2102), Abu Dawud (4204), An -Nasaa'i (5076), Ibn Maja (3524, and MusnadImam Ahmad, volume 3, page 316).

We are also told by Jabir Ibn Abdullah that the Messenger (sallAllahu alaihi wa sallam) said: "Truly neither the Jews nor the Christians color their hair, so differentiate yourselves from them." (Muslim)

It is of the Sunnah to color gray hair using henna, or henna and katam. When colored with henna they will look orange and when colored with henna and katam they will look between red and black. There is nothing wrong with it and there is no sin in it, inshaa‘Allah.
