Can teenagers compose

Information on composition lessons

by Martin Ludwig Fiala

Children learn to paint in kindergarten, they paint pictures and write stories in school. They paint, write poetry, dance, only the music is practiced almost exclusively as an interpretation. They are allowed to invent anything, only to compose - they don't learn that. Why not?

Why shouldn't children and young people also be able to compose?
Everyone has the joy of playing and the ability to express themselves, which can be implemented musically. "Making music" is above all the creative handling of sounds, noises, musical "building blocks", playing techniques and spatial forms.

Learn to listen - learn to compose
The relationship to noise, tone, melody, chord, harmony, disharmony - learn to listen consciously. To perceive what has been heard as an experience and to learn to classify it. The children and young people motivate to create such experiences themselves.

"I want to write my own music!"
Composing - means inventing music. The creative game with tones, sounds, noises and also silence. This doesn't require child prodigies or academic elites, just a little talent, musical experimentation and the ability to capture what has been invented.

All sounds that can be generated with instruments, body / voice and also (furnishing) objects serve as compositional material. A selection is made from this for the planned composition. First a lot is tried out, then written down. The music should be thought out, playable and repeatable.

"New" instruments - such as the computer - are also used both in composing (e.g. sounds, noises, images, video ...) and in "writing notes".

The preoccupation of children and young people with composing should contribute to:

• to learn to understand music better in general,
• to bring "new music" closer,
• to promote and expand the expressiveness of young people and additional fields of
To expose self-expression freely,
• to inspire young people to be creative and musical,
• to raise awareness of the composition department as a creative area.

Who can participate: There are no musical requirements and no age limit to be accepted into the class. The desire to learn to compose is enough.
