The second level domain is unique, so it only exists once on the internet in combination with a certain top level domain: If "meinwunschname.de" is already registered on someone else, you can try to use alternatives such as "meinwunschname.com", Avoid “meinwunschname.berlin” or something similar. Top level domain

The top level domain is more important because the computer reads an Internet address from back to front: to which country / city does the address refer, what purpose does it serve? Only then is it important what the specific domain name is actually called. This is similar to sorting letters: Here, the sorting is first roughly based on country / city and only then according to the street name and, if applicable, the house number.



What is a subdomain? And what can I do with it?

The subdomain (also called third level) is the part of a domain that - separated by a point - is in front of the actual domain name (second level domain), for example "login.domainname.de", "blog.domainname.de "or" gallerie.domainname.de ". As a website operator, you have the option of clearly separating independent areas of a website from one another. Nevertheless, it is immediately apparent that each area belongs to a main project.

With subdomains, for example, not only different projects, but also locations, application areas and languages ​​can be represented in separate subdomains, whereby individual subdomains have to be managed independently. This ensures a clear structure for your website.

Another way to structure your website is to create subdirectories. Here, individual areas are separate, but always pay into your domain. This is good to know if you are into search engine optimization for your website.


Subdomain: ideal for test tasks

There are many ways to use subdomains: Setting up a test environment is one. New ideas can be tried out on the subdomain without disrupting operations on the main website. Subdomains are also ideal if, for example, major changes are planned to a website. Then it can make sense to create a copy of the page under a subdomain such as "test.mein-shop.de" and to test the planned changes here first.


Use subdomains as quick access URLs

Subdomains can also simply be used as a practical “short URL” for landing pages or certain sub-pages. For example, long links for selected promotions or certain products on your website or shop can be shortened in order to print them on promotional materials. The actual URL could be as follows: "mein-shop.de/produkte/teekannen/haben-teekanne/sonderangebote/". It's not particularly attractive or easy to remember, however, especially if your customers have to type in the URL first. Here, subdomains can be used specifically as forwarding. You simply link a subdomain such as "aktion.mein-shop.de" to the actual URL in order to get a shorter one that can also be printed on flyers and is much easier to type.

What is the use of having your own domain?

Now that you know what a domain is and what to do with subdomains, you can use them successfully for yourself.
