How do I define the term ecology
Ecology is a branch of biology. The word "ecology" can be derived from the Greek words "oikos" (household) and "logos" (teaching). She investigates how plants, people and animals depend on their environment or influence one another. So ecology deals with the interrelationships between living beings and their environment. But what exactly is the environment? The environment is everything you see, feel, taste and smell around you.
The environment is made up of various components. Ecologists differentiate between inanimate and animate factors. The inanimate factors include, for example, the climate, the water or the soil, because they do not live themselves. The animate factors include all influences and relationships that exist between the various living beings.
The trees of the rainforest, for example, are often referred to as the "green lungs" of the earth, because they produce important oxygen that we need to breathe and live. But it is also home to many animals. Without it, numerous animal species would lose their habitat and shelter and no longer find enough food. Certain fungi and bacteria are very important for the forest, because without them all the leaves could not be broken down and converted into soil, for example. The rainforest thus forms a so-called closed system, an ecosystem in which every animal and every plant has an important role to play in making the system work.
All of the earth's ecosystems together make up the biosphere. In addition to the forest, ecosystems can also be a pond or an ocean, for example. An ecosystem is inhabited by living things that are interdependent. Such a system is very fragile and humans, who, unlike many animals and plants, can move around in different ecosystems, have to be careful with nature. If, for example, too many fish are caught or numerous trees are felled in a forest, an ecosystem can be thrown out of balance. That would then endanger the habitat of many animals and plants.
The ecologists are also studying what food and what environment certain species need in order to survive. In ecology, scientists also deal with important questions about environmental protection. It has meanwhile become an important area of this subject, because the water, the air and the soil are sometimes very polluted. Ecological environmental protection therefore endeavors to restore the balance in nature and to show people that we have to treat our environment carefully.
