Which supercar has the least maintenance

Top ten: V8 sports cars up to 15,000 euros - Ten V8 sports cars for the small budget

By Arild Eichbaum

Berlin - Don't feel like family-friendly vans, emotionless electric cars and front-wheel drive SUVs? It should be a real car, a car like it used to be - in which driving is an event? Then eight cylinders are the measure of all things, preferably under a front hood that is not too short. The old sports car builder joke applies to our V8 athletes, and also to vehicle owners: You can make a small fortune with sports cars if you start with a large fortune.

Maintenance and repairs can cost a lot of money, as can fuel and tires. If you don't want to leave it at dreaming: The V8 dream cars presented here are bubbling with a six-month MOT and apart from two exceptions with prices up to a maximum of 15,000 euros in your own garage.

1. Chevrolet Corvette (C3 / C4)

The Corvette C3 is the third generation of the V8 classic. It was introduced in 1967 Source: Chevrolet The Corvette is one of the absolute V8 legends. It makes it easy for us: the V8 is always on board here. With the exception of a few years of the C3, all Corvettes offer a lot of torque, a lot of power and a great sound. A displacement of at least 5.7 liters makes it possible.

In addition to a technically interesting independent suspension, the Corvette is also the only mass-produced sports car to have one GRP body. The bad boy image of the model series C3 and C4 built from 1968 to 1996 is free. An often overlooked rocket is the C4 ZR1 with a minimum of 385 hp. From 1992, the newly introduced LT1 Small Block provided more than 300 hp even in the production model.

2. Mercedes SL 500 (R129 / R230)

Friends of manual shifting will not get their money's worth here. The SL 500 is only available with an automatic system. Source: Daimler The abbreviation SL means “Sport-Leicht” or “Super-Leicht” at Mercedes. Both of these hardly apply to the convertibles of the Mercedes R129 and R230 series, fast and luxurious are more appropriate Be it the first with a soft top or the second with an electrically retractable hard top. Another plus point: The first owner never had to turn the penny twice, so that there are sometimes extensive extras.

Working under the long hoods of the Mercedes SL 500 different eight-cylinders with mostly five liters displacement (from 2006: 5.5 l). They produce at least 306 hp and 460 Newton meters of torque, which ensures confident progress. Bad for automatic switches: SL 500 is only available with automatic transmission.

3. Jaguar XK

The abbreviation "XK" was idle at Jaguar for many years. It was not until 1996 that the British revived the model name Source: Picture-Alliance Like its continental colleague from Stuttgart the Jaguar XK is more about comfort than the curve robbery. Which doesn't mean he's slow. The sports car, presented in 1996, was offered closed or open and as an XK8 with a 4.0-liter naturally aspirated engine or as an XKR with an equally large compressor engine.

The latter stands out from the XK8 with its rear spoiler lip, ventilation slots in the bonnet, grille and larger wheels. From 2002 the displacement of both versions increased to 4.2 liters, the output from 284 to 298 hp or from 363 to 396 hp.

4. Cadillac Allante

Only 21,430 copies of the front-wheel drive Allante were producedSource: Cadillac Launched as an alternative for US SL buyers in 1987, it was never easy for the noble sled, which was finally assembled by Pininfarina in Turin. Because General Motors back then relied on the only partially sporty front-wheel drive.

Anyone who can overlook it gets a real exclusivity: in seven years only 21,430 copies made. The models from 1989 with a displacement increased by 0.4 to 4.5 liters and more generous equipment are more recommendable.

At the end of July 2010, Lexus stopped production of the SC 430Source: Lexus SL competitor, the third: Toyota's noble subsidiary Lexus also wanted to steal Mercedes customers and launched the SC 430 in 2001 for this purpose. The basis was the rear-wheel drive Lexus GS. As with the German model, there was one that was very popular at the time retractable hard top, but not entry-level six-cylinder: the luxury convertible was powered by a 4.3-liter eight-cylinder engine with 300 hp and a torque of 430 Newton meters.

In the spring of 2006, the Lexus SC 430 underwent a slight facelift with a refreshed front, slightly revised rear and new taillights. Meanwhile, the performance decreased slightly to 286 hp.

6. Pontiac Firebird Trans Am

Unfortunately, the Pontiac brand did not survive the bankruptcy of the parent company GM in 2009. A year later it was over for the manufacturer Quelle: mobile.de Hardly anyone came closer to the Corvette: In terms of longitudinal and transverse dynamics, the third and fourth series of the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am showed no weaknesses. This is especially true for the GTA or later as WS6 Ram Air variants.

If you want to walk in Michael Knight's footsteps, but the debut model from 1982 is less recommended. It was not until 1984 that the 5-liter engine returned to its standard 190 hp. From then on it worked with the driving pleasure. The at least 305 PS strong LS1 models from 1998 onwards, which are said to have a significant increase in performance, were very rapid. After all, it was the Corvette engine.

After the fourth generation of the Starrachs athlete had become a little quiet, the Mustang V, which was designed in the then highly topical retro look, began to attract attention in 2005.

The eight-enders made at least 218 hp in the fourth Mustang, while the fifth series V8 model, again called GT, had at least 305 hp. Another 100 hp more the Coyote engine introduced for 2011, but compared to the above modular predecessors with the V8, which has grown by 0.4 to 5.0 liters, it does not yet fall into the price limit. 8. Chevrolet Camaro Z-28

The name IROC is the abbreviation for International Race of Champions, a US motorsport association that ceased operations in 2007 Source: Chevrolet The Z-28 was for the Chevrolet Camaro what the Trans Am was for the Firebird - the sporty top model with good handling . Traditionally with the same bodies as the Pontiac cousin, the two US national athletes became much more similar under the hood from the third generation launched in 1982.

Things went particularly quickly with the IROC models added in 1985which were no longer available in the fourth series from 1993. In the latter, the highlight from 1998 onwards was the LS1 block from the Corvette C5 with 288 hp. From 2001 there were 22 hp more in this country.

10. Dodge Challenger Hemi

The Dodge Challenger does not fall within the given price range. But what would a V8 list be without a Challenger? Source: mobile.de Still wanting a V8 Mercedes? Under the sheet metal, the Challenger, which was created in the times of Daimler-Chrysler, is a fairly German car because of various chassis components of the E-Class W210. But his heart beats in a purely American rhythm.

The massive Challenger, unlike the Mustang, also gallops out of the 15,000 euro range. Mopar fans have always loved to give their last shirt for the potent Hemi-V8. Introduced in 2008, the Challenger the frequent 5.7-liter version has 381 hp. The rarer 6.1 and 6.4 liter models produce 431 and 477 hp, respectively.
