Structure and content

The master’s degree in Interreligious Studies: Judaism - Christianity - Islam comprises 120 ECTS and is designed to last four semesters (full-time study).

The main focus of the modules is:

  • A Religious Traditions: the Scriptures and Faith Practices of the Three Monotheistic Religions.
  • B Interreligious relationships: interreligious relationships in the past and present (dialogues, conflicts, encounters).
  • C Political theory: the relationship between rule, society and religion in terms of legitimacy, freedom and justice.
  • D Scientific Project: practical relevance: you take part in a scientific, cultural or religious event, in a practical project, e.g. "Jewish-Franconian local history", or do an internship.
  • E Practical language training: language course in Arabic, Hebrew or ancient Greek

Your master’s thesis and the subsequent master’s final examination conclude your studies.

Module group A: Religious Traditions

In the Module group A knowledge of at least two of the three monotheistic traditions contained in the courses should be acquired or existing knowledge should be deepened.

  • A 1 module: Religious Traditions I [10 ECTS points]
  • A 2 Module: Religious Traditions II [10 ECTS points]

 

Qualification goals: In this module the basics for a critical understanding of the three religious traditions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) are acquired. Among other things, the students should Acquire knowledge of the Holy Scriptures (origin / context of preaching, principles of exegesis, current relevance for believers) and the central contents of faith. Furthermore, they should understand various forms of expression of religious practice and their religious and cultural significance and be able to reflect them scientifically, as well as be familiar with important currents of theological and philosophical reflection (including mystical movements) including the respective ethical and legal norms.

At least two of the three monotheistic religions offered in the curriculum should be studied in depth. The two focal points are divided between modules A1 and A2.

 

Contents:

  • The Holy Scriptures of the three religions Judaism, Christianity, Islam: Old Testament (in different canons: Biblia Hebraica, Septuaginta, Vulgate); New Testament; Jewish traditional literature (especially Talmudim and Midrschim); Koran
  • Religious traditions in theological and philosophical reflection as well as in mysticism

  • Legal and ethical norms

  • Religious (belief) practice (rite, cult, symbolism, art, everyday life)

Module group B: Interreligious Relationships

Module group B includes courses on interreligious issues in the past and present.

  • B 1 Module: Interreligious Relationships I [10 ECTS points]
  • B 2 Module: Interreligious Relations II [10 ECTS points]

 

Qualification goals: The aim is to be able to speak and act appropriately in the field of interreligious encounters, for example by being able to understand and name misunderstandings and conflicts between Jews, Christians and Muslims based on their internal religious conditions. The students are enabled to reflect on the political and social role and embedding of religion and to recognize the cultural and social backgrounds of religious conflicts. In particular, they should be able to reflect ideas such as the religious neutrality of the free state or that of multicultural coexistence with regard to what they can mean for different religious communities.

In a scientifically responsible knowledge of the historical, social and cultural requirements of those involved in interreligious encounters, the fundamentals of an interreligious conversation based on respect and mutual recognition should also be reflected on.

 

Content: The subject is interreligious relationships in the past and present (conflicts, religious dialogues, their expression in the mirror of art and literature; Judaism, Christianity and Islam as diaspora cultures; Jerusalem as the holy city of Jews, Christians and Muslims).

A special focus is on dealing with socio-political implications of religions from the perspective of others and oneself (religious-sociological analyzes of religious constellations and developments nationally and internationally; state and social theories and the positioning of religion in them; relationships between religion, law and ethos / Morality; religion and human rights; attempts at religious legitimation of violence and its criticism; the role of religions in social and political conflicts; fundamentalisms).

Module group C: Political Theories

Module group C encompasses the relationships between rule, society and religion with regard to questions of legitimation, freedom and justice.

Qualification goals: The students should first understand the basic problems of a manorial social order and be able to recognize and weigh up the different ideas for solutions and their development history and continuity in their basic features. On this basis, they should be able to develop their own ideas of the central topics of normative political theory, know the controversies and developments and interpret and also criticize current developments and issues in the light of these concepts and conceptions.

 

Contents: The introductory lecture deals with the central questions of political theory: How can political rule be legitimized? What should it cover, what should be decided politically and why? How can and should decisions be made in the political arena? What should the standards of good politics be? How can rule be kept in check?

Seminars / exercises deepen specific topics of the lecture. There are regular events that focus on the relationship between rule and religion; however, the choice of event is left to the student.

The lecture on normative political theory deals in rotation with the two subject complexes "rule and freedom" and "theories of just order". Individual topics are in particular: organizational concepts; Political ideologies; Ideas of the legitimation of rule; Conceptions of social justice; Freedom and equality; Common good and interest; Human rights.

 

Module group D: Scientific project

Module D establishes the practical relevance: You take part in a scientific, cultural or religious event, in a practical project, e.g. B. "Jüdisch-Fränkische Heimatkunde", or do an internship.

Qualification goals: In this module, depending on the focus of the students, the acquired scientific and methodological knowledge should be tested. There is the possibility to either apply one's own skills pedagogically and didactically to a teaching-learning concept, to contribute them to a research project or to help design a practical seminar. It is also possible to have an internship credited.

 

Contents: This module comprises a scientific project that either includes the conception of a scientific, cultural or religious event or the active participation in one. Alternatively, a tutorial can be designed and carried out or you can work on an existing scientific project. The projects focus on the interreligious relations between Judaism, Christianity and Islam. When choosing a topic and shaping the project, it is important to ensure that at least two religious traditions are taken into account.

 

Module group E: practical language training

Module group E includes practical language training: Arabic, Hebrew or ancient Greek.

Qualification goals: Basic grammatical, morphological and syntactic knowledge should be acquired in the chosen language, which should enable (with the help of dictionaries) the understanding of technical terms and the reception of simple to moderately difficult texts. The respective goals can, however, differ greatly depending on the language selected.

For the advanced and reading courses, the aim is to develop the respective skills up to fluent reception and active speaking ability (depending on the level of the course).

 

Contents: The practical language training usually includes participation in an introductory language course over two semesters in one of the three source languages ​​(Arabic, Hebrew or Ancient / Biblical Greek). Languages ​​other than those mentioned, but relevant for interreligious dialogue, can be accepted by the examination board upon request. The exact content may vary depending on the language selected.

Students who already have language skills at the level of the written examination of module E2 can complete E1 and / or E2 as part of an advanced language course (SA) or a reading course (S / Ü). The possibility of crediting equivalent study and examination achievements remains unaffected.
