Who Chooses Magento Web Development

For beginners: Shopware vs. Magento - a comparison

Batman vs. Superman, Apple vs. Samsung and Shopware vs. Magento - all very exciting duels. I would like to go into the latter today and compare both online shop systems. On the one hand there is Magento, which was launched in 2008 by Varien Inc. in Palo Alto, and on the other hand there is the Shopware shop system developed in Germany in 2003. However, this comparison is not very easy. You can't say that one or the other system is better, you should rather ask yourself which of the systems suits you and your requirements.
  1. Shopware: the modular shop system from Germany
    1. In your own shopping world
    2. Out-of-the-box functions

Shopware: the modular shop system from Germany

Just like Magento, Shopware is available as a Open source e-commerce system and in the commercial edition available. The difference here is mainly due to the possibilities: With the paid version, more features are activated for you and you receive support from Shopware.

In your own shopping world

Let's take a look at the system itself: If you install Shopware, version 5.5.7 gives you a clear and easy-to-understand backend. The so-called Shopping world you can easily use different Building blocks (Text, image, etc.). So you can see directly what the respective page would look like. So you don't necessarily need the ultimate programming skills. :-)
In the Theme and Plugin Manager, as the names suggest, themes and plugins can be easily installed with one click. Speaking of which: we at Mittwald also have our own template "Tasty by Mittwald" developed. You can convince yourself of this in a demo and get a picture of a possible shop appearance with Shopware.

Out-of-the-box functions

Also perfect for beginners and those who want to quickly implement something: the Out-of-the-box functions. As the name suggests, you get these properties or features that you don't have to do anything more. They are made available to you immediately after installation without any adjustments. Shopware also guarantees a Quality control, so that you are guaranteed a high product quality.

And if you don't know what to do, you don't have to google - Shopware offers its own wiki, in which you can find, among other things, pictorial explanations in German and English.

Stage it: Easy staging for Shopware

In addition to the “Tasty by Mittwald” theme mentioned above and our support, which is concentrated with specialist knowledge, we offer you our reliable and high-performance shopware hostingEasy staging at. With this you are in one Development environment, in which you can make design ideas or software changes to your shop without it being directly visible in the live system or there being a downtime.

With just a few clicks you can set up a staging environment and you're ready to go. As soon as you have adjusted all changes, you “jump” from the staging environment to live with just a few clicks. The orders received during this phase are not lost! These are transferred from the “old” to the “new” live environment with the plugins specially developed for Easy Staging - you practically don't need to pay attention to anything else. :-)

The shopping worlds mentioned at the beginning make the shop system unique. So you have the opportunity to do that To make online shopping an experience for the customer. With the elements that are easy to add and freely positionable, such as images, banners or videos, you can design your shop as individually as you like. If you want to “captivate” your customers even more emotionally, you have With the paid version, you have the option of telling your own stories with storytelling and making the products tangible for your customers.

Magento: the giant from America

Magento is also an open source software. But you can also purchase it as a paid version. Just like Shopware, support is only offered by the latter. Note that this is only on English is because Magento, as mentioned at the beginning, is based in America. For this reason, one can say that the product is not really designed for the German market. Nevertheless, it is possible to adapt Magento to this. That goes with Extensions such as Market Ready Germany or Magento German Shopthat you would have to install.

You can count on Mittwald for these or other processes, questions and requests. After all, we have many years of experience with the online shop system and look after thousands of Magento installations. Do you want to test Mittwald's Magento hosting and our support? You are welcome to do this here.

This is what Magento offers you: From SEO to templates to the API

But now let's see what you can expect from the American shop system. Anyway you will many extensions bump. Here you should weigh which ones you really need and which you don't. It is well known that too many cooks spoil the broth. ;-)
In the field of Templates and plugins Magento also offers many options - you are free to choose which one you choose. Just like Shopware, Magento 2 has its own API. Both shop systems thus offer the possibility of docking with any system. Besides, Magento supports many SEO features and enables you to be successful in the increasingly important search engine optimization.

Developers make it possible

Magento is characterized by a clean front and back end off, but some points are well hidden that are not immediately apparent. This is the reason for Magento quite a bit of training necessary. You can enter a lot in this shop system, for example product, customer or transaction data as well as content, but there are no shopping worlds like with Shopware. If you want more elaborate and / or complex adjustments to your shop, be aware that you will need developers for this.

Magento: a new part of the Adobe Commerce Cloud

Magento was a wholly owned subsidiary of eBay from June 2011 to November 2015. As of November 2015, the private equity company Permira took over the company. In June 2018, however, it was announced that Purchased Magento from Adobe Systems and now hopefully get into calm waters. Since it is still from Adobe no official statement there, one can only speculate how things will go there with Magento in the future. The shop system is already part of the so-called “Adobe Commerce Cloud”.

Conclusion - what's better now?

As mentioned at the beginning, I can't and don't want to tell you which e-commerce system is better or worse. That depends entirely on your individual requirements. However, it can definitely be stated that the support to the manufacturer at Shopware is easier in terms of language and country, which in no way speaks against Magento. Both systems are high-performance thanks to the use of PHP 7. The lack of clarity in Magento could perhaps cause uncertainty. The system has been bought up by Adobe, but so far there has been no statement as to how things will proceed with Magento at Adobe in the future. Shopware could possibly benefit from this and win over more agencies. After all, with Shopware it is already certain what is on the roadmap. This includes an improved sitemap, a responsive backend, a better API connection, Symfony 4 full stack integration and much more. m.

One thing is certain in any case: Both Magento and Shopware can be installed easily and quickly in the Mittwald customer center with a one-click, so that you can get started right away. ;-)
Of course, we will also inform you regularly about new versions and security releases.

Which page are you on - do you use Shopware or Magento? Perhaps your shop also runs on a completely different shop system? Please let us know. :-) We look forward to your answers!
