Every person is statistical

More women than men

Women are slightly in the majority in the canton of Zurich, with 99 men for every 100 women. However, the sexes are unevenly distributed over the years of age. Among the 0 to 59-year-olds, men are more represented than women, from 60 onwards the opposite is true. Why this shift? On the one hand, slightly more boys than girls are born naturally, and there are slightly more men than women, and on the other hand, the life expectancy of women is higher than that of men.

Every fourth person with a foreign passport

The number of foreign nationals was around 421,000 at the end of 2020. This corresponds to a proportion of foreigners of 27 percent. This means that the number of foreign nationals has grown by over 90,000, or a good 25 percent, in the last ten years.

The population is aging

Every fifth person in Zurich's population is younger than 20, 63 percent are between 20 and 64 years old and the remaining 17 percent are 65 years of age or older. All three age groups have grown over the past ten years. But because the baby boom years from the baby boom era are now constantly reaching retirement age and life expectancy is increasing, the weight of people aged 65 and over is increasing. In the canton of Zurich, too, the population is aging, albeit relatively moderately because of the immigration of young people.
